Vasulka Media ArchiveUniversity of Colorado System & Auraria Higher Education CenterOpen Access
The Vasulkas: Steina, an Icelander, educated in music at the Prague Conservatory of Music, & Woody, a graduate of Prague's Film Academy, arrived in New York City just in time for the new media explosion. They brought with them their experience of the European media awakening, which helped them blend seamlessly into the youth media revolution of the late sixties & early seventies in the United States. They found themselves right at the introduction of small format video as it initialized the process of integrating electronic moving images into both social & artistic concepts. In the spirit of the media activism of the period, they established The Kitchen, a multipurpose media theater, still active, some 40 years later. Since their early Kitchen days, the Vasulkas' have remained at the leading edge of media art creation, exhibition, & archiving. This collection contains some of their cutting edge studies in video that experiment with form, content, & presentation.
